Photobiomodulation (PBM)
at BodyLink

At BodyLink, we support the nervous system from the ground up — using research-based tools to improve brain function, learning, and emotional regulation.
One of the advanced tools we offer is Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level light therapy.

PBM is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate healing and cellular repair. These wavelengths penetrate through the skin to activate cells at a mitochondrial level — improving how the brain and body produce energy, manage inflammation, and respond to stress.

Rather than “treating symptoms,” PBM helps restore balance and function by supporting the body’s own repair systems.

How does it work?

When light is applied to specific areas (such as the head, spine, or joints), it stimulates a process called photobiomodulation within the cells. This process:

  • Enhances mitochondrial function (the cell’s energy production)

  • Increases circulation and oxygen delivery to brain and body tissues

  • Reduces neuroinflammation and supports cellular repair

  • Promotes neuroplasticity, helping the brain form stronger connections

PBM has been widely studied in clinical settings and shows promising results for children and adults with neurological, emotional, and developmental challenges.

Why It’s Helpful for Children

For children with learning, behavioural, or sensory challenges, PBM can be a powerful tool to support:

✔ Improved attention and focus
✔ More restful sleep
✔ Reduced emotional reactivity or sensory overload
✔ Faster recovery from illness or inflammation
✔ A calmer, more regulated nervous system

It’s safe, non-invasive, and pain-free — sessions are brief and well-tolerated, even by sensitive children.

How We Use It at BodyLink

At BodyLink, PBM is used as part of an integrated therapy approach. We don’t use light therapy in isolation — instead, we pair it with specific movement, reflex, or neurodevelopmental activities to maximise brain plasticity and regulation.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Assessment – We first determine whether PBM is appropriate based on your child’s history, goals, and response to prior therapies.

  2. In-Clinic Application – Red or near-infrared light is applied for just a few minutes over key areas (e.g. forehead, spine, chest, or abdomen) depending on the goal.

  3. Targeted Integration Activities – We follow this with tailored exercises to activate and reinforce brain-body pathways.

  4. Ongoing Review – We monitor how your child responds, adjusting dosage, frequency, and protocols as needed.

Safety & Research

Photobiomodulation is supported by a growing body of international research. Studies have shown benefits for brain injury, anxiety, learning differences, sensory processing, and immune resilience. It has no known serious side effects, and our team uses clinically appropriate devices and protocols suited to children. Learn More

A Holistic Support Tool

Light therapy doesn’t replace foundational therapies — but it can strengthen them. When used alongside movement-based integration, relationship-based care, and lifestyle support, PBM can offer a gentle boost to the brain’s ability to adapt, grow, and self-regulate.

It’s one of the many tools we use to help children — and their families — thrive.
