Light Therapy Support (PBM)
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a gentle, non-invasive supporting tool we may use within your plan.
Based in Silverdale, Auckland. Calm, non-invasive support.
Some people find BodyLink because they've come across the term PBM and want to know what it is. Others come to us for a broader plan, and PBM is one of the supportive tools we may recommend along the way.
At BodyLink,
PBM Light Therapy is a supporting tool, not a standalone service. If it's relevant for you (or your child) we'll explain why we're using it, what it does, and how it fits into your overall plan.
PBM stands for Photobiomodulation
This is a form of light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support the body's own ability to heal and regulate itself.
Here's the part worth knowing: this light is absorbed at a cellular level, where it stimulates the mitochondria - the part of every cell responsible for producing energy. When cells have more available energy, the body functions more effectively - reducing inflammation, supporting recovery, and helping the nervous system find its balance.
This is what separates PBM from general wellness trends. There's a well-researched mechanism behind it, supported by a growing body of peer-reviewed evidence, and it's why PBM is increasingly used in neurodevelopmental and rehabilitation settings worldwide - and growing in availability across New Zealand.
You don't need to understand every detail of the science to benefit from it, but for families doing their research, it helps to know there's a real reason it works.
Why BodyLink uses PBM
At BodyLink, we're focused on the brain and body connection and how the nervous system is coping with everyday demands.
Sometimes, when a person is carrying a lot of load, the most helpful first step is creating more capacity in the system; supporting regulation, recovery, and energy so other parts of the plan can land more effectively. Think of it as preparing the body to be more ready to receive the work, not just doing more of it.
That's where PBM may be useful.
We may use PBM because it can be:
- gentle and non-invasive - suitable even for sensitive children and adults
- supportive alongside the clinical work we're doing in session
- easy to incorporate within a personalised plan
- backed by a growing body of international research in neurology and brain health
It's not about doing more things. It's about choosing the right tools, in the right order, for the right person.
What it may support
If you’re specifically searching for PBM, the best first step is still an initial appointment so we can confirm whether it’s appropriate for you and what it should be paired with.
Everyone’s needs are different, and we avoid blanket promises. PBM may be considered within a plan when someone is looking for support with things like:
Children and developmental support
- attention, focus, or learning challenges
- sensory processing difficulties or overload
- emotional dysregulation or heightened reactivity
- disrupted sleep patterns
- supporting nervous system development alongside other therapies
- slow recovery from illness or persistent fatigue
Regulation and nervous system load
- feeling constantly 'on', wired, or overwhelmed
- difficulty winding down or switching off
- low resilience under stress
Recovery and general wellbeing
- feeling run down or under persistent load
- supporting overall resilience and capacity
- helping the body settle into a more regulated state over time
What a session is like
If PBM is included in your care plan, we’ll make sure you understand:
- why it's included
- how it fits with your overall goals
- what we're looking for over time
PBM sessions are designed to be calm and comfortable.
A typical session includes:
- a brief check-in on what's changed since last time
- setting things up in a way that's appropriate for you
- a quiet, supported environment
- adjustment over time based on how you respond and what your plan requires
The device used at BodyLink's Silverdale clinic is a professional-grade, prescription-level photobiomodulation laser- compact and handheld. It delivers precise wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to targeted areas of the body, supporting the cellular repair and regulation process described above.
It has a small internal fan to keep it cool, which produces a gentle hum during use. There's no heat, no discomfort, and nothing invasive. Most people
(including children who are sensitive to sound or touch) find it easy to tolerate from the very first session.

What happens at the PBM assessment
If you're unsure whether PBM is relevant for you, the best place to begin is an initial appointment and we'll talk through what's going on and whether PBM makes sense as part of your plan.
Once PBM has been recommended, we'll carry out a brief assessment before starting treatment. This helps us understand exactly how and where to apply the therapy for the best results.
We’ll:
- review what's been going on and what your plan is working toward
- identify the most appropriate areas to target based on your presentation and goals
- explain what the device does, what it feels like, and what to expect during and after a session
- answer any questions before we begin
After your initial appointment, we’ll refer to this as your initial appointment and focus on moving forward with the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book PBM directly?
In most cases, PBM is used as a supporting tool within a broader plan. If you’re unsure, book an initial appointment and we’ll guide you.
What is the difference between PBM and red light therapy?
Red light therapy is a broad term covering many consumer-grade products including panels, lamps, and LED devices. PBM refers specifically to the clinical application of calibrated red and near-infrared light at therapeutic doses, using professional-grade equipment and targeted protocols. The mechanism is the same; the precision, dosage, and clinical application are not.
Is it invasive or painful?
Not at all. PBM is completely non-invasive. The device is held close to the skin — there's no contact required, no heat, and no discomfort. Most people find it relaxing.
Is it suitable for children and adults?
Yes. PBM is well-tolerated by both children and adults, including those who are sensory-sensitive or new to this type of therapy. At BodyLink we use it with children regularly and adjust the approach based on each child's needs and responses.
Do you diagnose medical conditions?
No. BodyLink provides non-invasive wellbeing support and does not replace medical diagnosis, emergency care, or treatment from your registered healthcare provider.
How does PBM actually work?
The light wavelengths used in PBM are absorbed by the mitochondria — the energy-producing structures inside each cell. This triggers an increase in ATP (the cell's fuel), which supports the body's ability to reduce inflammation, repair tissue, and regulate the nervous system. It's this cellular mechanism that distinguishes PBM from general wellness light products. For families who want to go deeper on the science, this peer-reviewed article is a good starting point.
How many sessions will we need?
This varies depending on what we're working on and how you or your child responds. We'll give you a clearer picture after the initial appointment and will review progress regularly as we go.
Where can I learn more about PBM from an expert?
A great starting point is the work of Dr Josh Madsen, whose content on photobiomodulation is widely followed by families navigating neurodevelopmental challenges. Both Michelle and Janelle have completed Dr Josh's practitioner course. Learn more about his work.
Where is BodyLink located and do you see clients from outside Auckland?
We're based in Silverdale on Auckland's North Shore, and see clients from across the wider Auckland region. We also have clients travel from further afield — if you're based outside Auckland and searching for a PBM practitioner in New Zealand, we'd encourage you to get in touch to discuss what's possible.
